Plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor in bipolar and unipolar depression

چکیده
Objective There is increasing evidence that BrainDerived Neurotrophic Factor may be involved in the pathophysiology of depression and the actions of antidepressants. At the same time, the differential diagnosis between unipolar and bipolar depression is often a challenge with important treatment implications. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between BrainDerived Neurotrophic Factor levels and clinical variables in subjects with unipolar versus bipolar depression.

Treatments for brain dysfunction have relied traditionally on medication-based approaches. Non-invasive transcranial electric stimulation (tES) approaches such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) offer an alternative approach for psychiatric treatment. In this approach, low level (1–2 mA) currents are applied over appropriate...

متن کاملFurther evidence supporting the influence of brain-derived neurotrophic factor on the outcome of bipolar depression: independent effect of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and harm avoidance.
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a candidate gene for response to antidepressant treatment. However, response to pharmacological treatments is moderated by both genetic and other factors within individuals. For example, there is evidence of an influence of the temperamental trait of harm avoidance on the outcome of depressive disorders. In the present study we aimed to investigate the effec...
متن کاملSerum brain-derived neurotrophic factor in bipolar and unipolar depression: a potential adjunctive tool for differential diagnosis.
The differential diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a diagnostic challenge during depressive episodes. Noteworthy, the proper differentiation between BD depressive state and MDD has important treatment implications. BDNF levels may be valuable adjunctive tool for this differential diagnosis. Ten subjects with MDD, forty with BD type I and thirty healthy co...
